It's deja vu (all over again)! I was 16 and walking with my brother Patrick and a friend of ours Mike Hogan. We probably shouldn't have been in the French Quarter (much less Bourbon Street), but we were there anyway. We walked past the Famous Door, and I glanced at the list of musicians and celebrities of note who had performed there. Uncle Don's name was jumped out at me. I called Mike and Patrick and said, "Hey look. Uncle Don's name is on the Door!" We laughed about our family's celebrity status and looked in the window at the band playing inside. You guessed it - Uncle Don was up there on stage. I waved to him from outside. He saw me and waived back with a great big smile. Now we were faced with a dilemna! What excuse could we possibly come up with to explain to mom and dad (Jane and Pete Duffy) what we were doing in the French Quarter on Bourbon Street on a weekend night? Fortunately, they never asked ;). It became a habit of ours to pass the Famous Door whenever we were in the French Quarter on Friday or Saturday Night. We were too young to get in, but not too young to look and waive. Sometimes Uncle Don was there, sometimes he wasn't. But when he was, we always made sure he saw us out listening to him. ---------------------------------- My other favorite Uncle Don story comes from Christmas Eve 1995. We were at the home of my late grandparents, Anthony and Marie at 6008 Spain Street. The night would usually end after she played Christmas Carols. The last few years, she couldn't remember all of our names, which great-grandkids belonged to which grandchildren or who was married to whom, but she remembered how to play Christams Carols on the piano. This was the first Christmas Eve that I ever spent without her. Clearly we needed someone else to take over carol duties. Uncle Don volunteered and did some pretty nice jazzy renditions. During the first song he played, the picture of Marie jumped off the piano and hit the floor cracking the glass. I was dumbfounded. I only had 1 light beer (8 oz.), and no one was close to that picture. I met Aunt Mary Lou Suhor in the kitchen and asked her if she saw the same thing I did. She said of course, but that she wanted to clean up the picture so Grandpa wouldn't get upset. (My take is there wasn't anything to upset Grandpa at that point. He was always comfortable in his easy chair with all the wit - until the end - that he always had). Mary Lou surmised that was Grandma's way of sending down love and joy from heaven to her family - her way of saying Merry Christmas. ---------------------------- --- Here's a special thanks from your Godson for the contributions you have given to all of us in the form of your music and company all those years. Until we meet again, Stephen P. Duffy
